Over 50 years of making music together.....
The Mideast Early Music Workshop began in 1971 when Marilyn Carlson, former Director of the Collegium Musicum Instrumental Ensembles at Oberlin College, gathered a group of recorder students together to share her passion for the music of the Medieval and Renaissance. Viol and Baroque Flute were added in subsequent years and the workshop moved to larger facilities in the greater Pittsburgh, PA area. Marilyn placed great emphasis on the importance of creating a welcoming, non-competitive atmosphere within the workshop, a tradition which we continue today.
Our name, "Mideast", reflects our location in the middle-eastern part of the U.S. where we welcome students from around the country.
